Buffer and server allocation in general multi-server queueing networks

چکیده
This paper deals with the joint optimization of the number of buffers and servers, an important issue since buffers and servers represent a significant amount of investment for many companies. The joint buffer and server optimization problem (BCAP) is a non-linear optimization problem with integer decision variables. The performance of the BCAP is evaluated by a combination of a two-moment approximation (developed for the performance analysis of finite general-service queues) and the generalized expansion method (a well-known method for performance analysis of acyclic networks of finite queues). A standard nonlinear optimization package is used to optimize the BCAP for a large number of experiments. A comprehensive set of numerical results is presented. The results show that the methodology is capable of handling the trade-off between the number of servers and buffers, yielding better throughputs than previously published studies. Also, the importance of the squared coefficient of variation of the service time is stressed, since it strongly influences the approximate optimal allocation.

Buffer allocation in general finite multi-server queuing networks
We address in this paper the buffer allocation problem in general service, finite waiting room, multi-server queueing networks. Several instances are examined using an approximation method to estimate the performance of the queueing networks and an iterative search method is developed to find the optimal buffer allocation within the network. The coefficient of variation of the service time is s...
متن کاملOn Two-Echelon Multi-Server Queue with Balking and Limited Intermediate Buffer
In this paper we study two echelon multi-server tandom queueing systems where customers arrive according to a poisson process with two different rates. The service rates at both echelons are independent of each other. The service times of customers is assumed to be completed in two stages. The service times at each stage are exponentially distributed. At the first stage, the customers may balk ...

متن کاملBuffer allocation in general single-server queueing networks
The optimal buffer allocation in queueing network systems is a difficult stochastic, non-linear, integer mathematical programming problem. Moreover, the objective function, the constraints or both are usually not available in closed-form, making the problem even harder. A good approximation for the performance measures is thus essential for a successful buffer allocation algorithm. A recently p...

The ever increasing demand of the subscribers has put pressure on the capacity of wireless networks around the world. To utilize the scare resources, in the present paper we propose an optimal allocation scheme for an integrated wireless/cellular model with handoff priority and handoff guarantee services. The suggested algorithm optimally allocates the resources in each cell and dynamically adj...

The service times during regular busy period, working vacation period and vacation times are assumed to be geometrically distributed. Customer...
